Obama Follows through on Campaign Promises: To Bankrupt the Coal Industry and Raise Energy Costs

On Monday, in a follow-through on the President's campaign promise to bankrupt the coal industry and raise Americans' energy prices, the Obama Administration announced a massive new EPA mandate for coal-fired American power plants. Following the announcement, Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01) released the following statement:

"In 2008, then-Senator Obama pledged to bankrupt the coal industry and raise energy prices for Americans. Unfortunately, for those most unable to afford to pay for his expensive regulations, like America's poor and for an already-dismal economy, today's EPA announcement confirms that President Obama plans to fulfill these pledges with expensive new mandates targeting coal-fired power plants.

"For Kansans, particularly customers of Sunflower in Kansas' 1st district, these proposals would be devastating if implemented. As Obama promised in 2008, our electricity rates will skyrocket because of his unscientific, politics-driven regulations. The result will be fewer jobs in rural Kansas, less economic opportunities for our graduates, and a reduced ability to compete with foreign companies.

"Back in 2009, the U.S. Senate even then under Democrat control rejected this cap-and-trade proposal. For the President and his EPA to move forward despite congressional rejection makes it clear that Obama is using his pen-and-a-phone as he threatened. This proposal is devastating not only to the American and Kansas economies--it is also a real threat to our Constitution."
